As a Catholic growing up, I heard a lot about a place called purgatory. Supposedly the soul that is still a little “unclean” at the time of its death would end up in a place called purgatory. Supposedly you would burn in the fires of purgatory until your soul was clean. It seems apparent to me, that Earth is in fact this purgatory. The juxtaposition of suffering and joy seem only more apparent through that lens. The story of Adam and Eve and their fall is the perfect example of why we (humanity) would be in a place like purgatory. We’re all fallen. But that is not to say that we are evil. We’re just somewhere in between heaven and hell figuring it out for ourselves. The good news about purgatory is, according to Catholics, that every soul in purgatory eventually goes to heaven.
I believe in Christianity and Buddhism. For instance, I believe in reincarnation for those who are not good enough for heaven and not bad enough for hell. Also, I’m a friend/ally to meditation and meditators, but I believe in Jesus as well. I’ve heard it said that the Buddhists were better with contemplation and the Christians were much better with action, which is why Christianity is the largest world religion. I am aware of the western church’s sins, however, and so I’m not exclusively Christian anymore.
Whatever way you choose, try to be open to this place in between called purgatory where we sort out who we really are. We all gotta go through it, but it’ll be worth it.
